Learn About International Culture with Passport DC

Passport DC

During this month-long event, Passport DC takes attendees around the world while highlighting DC’s international diplomatic community. While May is also International Cultural Awareness Month in Washington DC, it’s the perfect time for you and your family to get out and learn about various cultures. With programming by 70 embassies and DC’s cultural institutions, you’ll enjoy embassy open houses, street festivals and performances, workshops and so much more! Whether you’re a resident of the DC area or a visitor, you can travel the world right from Washington DC.

While Passport DC goes throughout the month, there are various events scheduled. These events include:

  • European Month of Culture – May 1-31
  • Flower Mart at National Cathedral – May 4 and 5
  • Around the World Embassy Tour – May 5
  • European Union Embassies’ Open House – May 12
  • Embassy Chef Challenge – May 17
  • Fiesta Asia! Street Festival – May 19

More on the Passport DC May Events

At the European Union Embassies’ Open House on May 12, guests will have the opportunity to listen and dance to cultural music, try authentic food and view European artwork and films, all at no charge. Participants in the embassy open house include Austria, Belgium, Germany, France and Sweden, among others.

May 17 marks the Embassy Chef Challenge that begins at 6:30 pm. This event provides guests an exclusive culinary experience where more than three dozen private chefs from Washington’s embassies will let you try some of their best dishes. There will also be a panel of celebrity judges there to select a winner while guests will get to vote for the people’s choice winner.

The Fiesta Asia! Street Festival is on May 19 and is the signature celebration. This event is held in conjunction with Asian Heritage Month Commemorations, which began back in 2006 in front of Capitol Hill. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy craft exhibits, live musical performances, cooking demonstrations, martial arts demonstrations, and more, making this one fiesta you don’t want to miss out on.
